Weekly Edition of Our Daily Bagel
Parashat Noach 5768/2007

This D'var Torah attempts to connect four readings: Torah, Haftarah, Mei Kituvim (from the writings) and the Brit Chadashah (New Testament). Spread on the Bagel (the main meditation) is the Cream Cheese, a pithy line to complement the idea.

The weekly reading for the week of 1 Cheshvan, 5768 - October 13, 2007 Parashah: Noach Genesis 6:9 to 11:32; the Haftarah: Ashkenazi Isaiah 54:1 to 55:5 and Sephardic Isaiah 54:1-10 is replaced by Shabbat Rosh Chodesh of Isaiah 66:1-24; Mei Kituvim: Daniel 4:1-37; Brit Chadashah: John 6:1-71

The Bagel: Passing through the waters.

"Who has heard such a thing? Who has seen such things? Shall a land be born in one day? Shall a nation be brought forth in one moment? For as soon as Zion was in labor she brought forth her children" (Isaiah 66:8).

Noach's ark passed through the waters. G-d brought that solitary family to a safe haven, a new world. During the Exodus, Israel passed through the waters. This time G-d opened the waters for Israel to pass through. Again, Israel crossed over the Jordan on dry ground for G-d stopped the Jordan river miraculously. Yonah passed through the waters both on board the ship in the stormy sea and inside the belly of the great fish. Yeshua passed through the waters in baptism and the baptism of the cross. Both the church and Israel have passed through the waters in various forms of persecution.

But the day is coming when all Israel will be born as a nation. This birth will be Israel's national deliverance for all time. It is said, in this verse, to be like a woman in labor about to give birth to a child. The child, as it were, passes through the waters of the water sac to be born. The labor pains will be the "Time of Jacob's Trouble" - the darkest period in all of history, then the coming of Yeshua on the white horse will end all persecution. The new world of Messianic blessing will pervade the entire globe. Going through the waters? Yeshua knows and by faith in Him, he will take you through them to an expected safe haven.

Cream Cheese: The good ship "Yeshua" gets you there every time.
